Job Description: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
Position Overview:
The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) plays a vital role in providing comprehensive veterinary care to animals under the supervision of licensed veterinarians. The RVT is responsible for assisting in all aspects of veterinary medicine, ensuring the well-being and comfort of animals, and maintaining a safe and clean work environment. This role requires exceptional technical skills, knowledge of veterinary procedures, and a genuine passion for animal care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Perform a wide range of veterinary nursing duties, including but not limited to:
- Assisting veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and procedures.
- Administering medication, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed.
- Collecting and analyzing laboratory samples, conducting diagnostic tests, and interpreting results.
- Preparing animals for surgery, monitoring anesthesia, and providing post-operative care.
- Conducting dental prophylaxis, dental radiography, and assisting with dental treatments.
- Managing and maintaining accurate medical records.
2. Provide exceptional patient care and ensure animal welfare by:
- Monitoring and assessing patient health, behavior, and response to treatment.
- Assisting with patient restraint, handling, and transportation.
- Recognizing and addressing emergency situations promptly.
- Educating clients on proper animal care, nutrition, and medication administration.
- Assisting with euthanasia procedures in a compassionate manner.
3. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment by:
- Assisting with inventory management, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment.
- Adhering to infection control protocols and practicing proper sterilization techniques.
- Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
- Participating in regular facility maintenance activities.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Education and Certification:
- Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent qualification.
- Current registration or licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
- Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
2. Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in performing veterinary nursing procedures, including venipuncture, catheter placement, and intubation.
- Experience with anesthesia monitoring, surgical assistance, and patient recovery.
- Proficient in radiography techniques, dental prophylaxis, and laboratory procedures.
- Ability to operate and maintain veterinary equipment and instruments.
- Understanding of pharmacology, drug calculations, and medication administration.
3. Animal Care and Handling:
- Strong understanding of animal behavior, handling, and restraint techniques.
- Ability to recognize signs of pain, distress, and illness in animals.
- Knowledge of common species-specific diseases, vaccinations, and preventive care.
- Familiarity with zoonotic diseases and adherence to proper infection control protocols.
4. Communication and Teamwork:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, and veterinarians.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to empathize with animal owners and colleagues.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a veterinary team.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
